Coconut Geranium, also called Gooseberry Geranium, has very strongly coconut-scented leaves and flowers on ornamental, low-growing, wide-spreading plants. Blooms late spring to first frost with a trailing habit that works well in hanging baskets, over rocks and walls. Suitable for fresh or dried herbal arrangements, potpourris and for growing indoors. In Victorian times, it was found in parlors, on porches and in gardens.
The scented leaves were baked into cakes and confections. Drought-tolerant, good for xeriscaping, easy to grow, needs little attention. Like many fine, old varieties, this fell out of favor as new hybrids were bred, but is being redisovered and treasured by gardeners in the know.
