The Costoluto Genovese Tomato is a treasured old Italian variety, having lumpy flattish convoluted, irregular shaped 6-9 oz. red fruits, absolutely delicious, with a slightly tart flavor.
Does best in hot weather but continues to produce when weather turns cool.
The tomato of choice for "conserve" or tomato puree in Italy. Makes a great paste as well, though not really recognized as such in America. Will yield huge flavor in conserves or pastes that concentrate the flavor, as it is bold and bright to begin with. Pairs extremely well with strong flavors and spices for sauces.
Fresh rich tomato flavor is best when grown in dry and sunny gardens that echo the Mediterranean climate. Will produce well elsewhere, but size and flavor will be less.
The "Costoluto" or ribbed tomatoes have been treasured in Italy and the Mediterranean since the early 18th Century. This was one of the first kinds of tomato to be introduced in Spain in the 1500s, and then on to Italy and France.

Indoors: 5 - 7 weeks before last frost sow 1/4" deep and keep soil evenly moist at 60- 70 degrees F. When the second set of leaves appears, transplant seedlings to individual pots.
Harden off 2 weeks before setting out, when weather is fully warm, in a spot with at least 8 hours of sun daily. Plant seedlings up to 2" under the first leaves, at least 3' apart. Water deeply and well in dry weather.
Outdoors: Sow as above, directly in site when weather is warm.
