Sicilian Basil - (Ocimum basilicum) |
|
Sicilian basil is a select Genovese type procured directly from Sicily; the original, true Sicilian strain. Extra large 4" blistered leaves and a very pungent scent that's even more assertive than Genovese. Used in Sicily as much for its strong scent as its sweet flavor. A favorite traditional Sicilian dish is Pesto trapanese (Sicilian basil and almond pesto) that is highly flavored.

Excellent, But Im Sticking with Genovese for Pesto |
| Sicilian Basil tastes great, has a lovely fragrance, and looks pretty in the garden. So WHY am I sticking with Genovese, when Sicilian Basil is so grand? Always looking for a short cut, I thought BIGGER leaves would mean less work when making pesto. Because the leaves are SOO big, the mid rib is a bit tough; I felt it should be removed. Removing the mid-rib from basil leaves is a bit time consuming, so there went my short cut! This is a prolific producer, so maybe Ill just leave it in the garden, where it is so pretty, or cut it and put it in a vase for its fragrance. Im writing from South New Jersey. |
