Summer Squash is one of the oldest known crops—it was found in 10,000 year old archaeological sites in Mexico. Its cultivation in the southern and eastern U.S. and some highlands of Central America dates back to at least 2700 BC.
The remarkable diversity was already present in pre- Columbian times.

Zappallo de Tronco, also called Zapallito de Tronco and Avocado Squash is a bushy upright plant with 3-4" acorn type squash with great texture and flavor. A wonderful cross between winter and summer squash with an edible rind. Can be eaten whole when small (2½-4 inches) as a summer squash or left to mature to the fully ribbed state and used as a winter squash. Very popular for farmers markets. Drought-tolerant and quick maturing.
Zappallo de Tronco makes both summer and winter squashes. The plant is semi bush and the squash in the summer has a dark green exterior and a light green flesh-similar to a hass avocado. It is sometimes referred to as an avocado squash. The flesh is very smooth and dry. As a summer squash it does not give off a lot of excess water like a zucchini does. As a winter squash it is dry, semi sweet and a relatively short keeper. It is often used in cooking-soups, pies, etc. This would be an excellent squash to have back in major circulation.
