Description

Jericho Lettuce - Thrives in the heat

A desert adapted variety bred in Israel with smooth sword shaped bright green upright leaves with a silky texture.

Does well in dry and hot climates and stays sweet and crispy despite the heat. Surprisingly, is also a superior lettuce in cooler seasons.

Extremely bolt resistant while keeping its sweet, tender and crisp characteristics. A great cut and come again variety. Home gardeners love it for smaller leaves and whole heads in warmer climates.

History

Lettuce is thought to have originated in Asia Minor, probably from one of the wild lettuce types, of which there are more than 100 varieties. Lettuce graced the tables of Persian kings, Roman senators, and medieval lords. It has been food for peasant and noble alike for hundreds of years. Lettuce was also prized medicinally for its cooling powers and was used to tame fevers, liver inflammations and lust.

Uses

Leaves are used in salads and on sandwiches.

Growing Tip

Mulching your lettuce plants will help the shallow root system maintain even moisture. Try to keep constant moisture by watering the soil not the leaves.

Exceptional lettuce variety, with an extremely large head

Posted by Francis Land House Master Gardeners on Dec 10, 2019

This is an exceptional lettuce variety, with an extremely large head, crisp and tasty. We again started seeds indoors on August 13 and transplanted it on September 24. We did not observe as large a growth as this past spring but nonetheless the plants produced well, were trouble free, withstood the freeze and a number of frosty mornings. We are still harvesting. All the Master Gardeners were very impressed with this lettuce variety.

    Jericho lettuce

Posted by Unknown on Aug 27, 2019

I followed the 16 hour seed soaking and planting instructions and have been so pleased to have edible lettuce in the garden all summer long. My vegetable garden has a shade structure for the extreme heat in Arizona and I mulched with 2 inches of mulch. The lettuce is just starting to bolt and it's the end of August.

This lettuce, in addition to the frisée we tried, have exceeded our expectations. Wish I could send a photo. It’s prettier than yours! Delicious. Will order again!

    Jericho Lettuce

Posted by Virginia Beach Master Gardeners on May 17, 2019

Comments from three Virginia Beach Master Gardeners at the Francis Land House garden - 1- The lettuce has a very impressively abundant growth habit developing a large head measuring 18” to 20” of crisp, evenly bright green leaves. There is very little loss to outer leaf browning presenting a very appealing & healthy appearance overall. The lettuce is crisp and tasty. I used it in several salads. It holds up well after dressing without becoming soggy or limp. The middle and center leaves are sweeter than the outer, but the entire head is good compared to other lettuces. The lettuce also lasts longer in the refrigerator than other lettuces - I have had it for a week and expect that it will be fine for another several days. 2- It is lovely, mild and reminds me of butter crunch lettuce, both in taste and texture. It has a large, well shaped head. The large leaves were perfect for sandwiches; roll ups and chopped into salads. I give it a big thumbs up! 3- Appearance: Large attractive head lettuce, almost flower-like in its growth pattern. Color: Bright green with light green interior leaves. Taste: Excellent. Sweet lettuce that compares better than most other romaine. Texture: Crisp leaves throughout. Overall, I would highly recommend this variety of lettuce.
