Burgess Buttercup Winter Squash - The Sweet Potato of Squash
A flattened turban type squash, 5-8" in diameter 3-5 lbs with thin hard dark-green rind, slight ribs and a distinctive blossom-end button. Very sweet medium-orange, fine quality, string-less, fiber-less flesh with a small seed cavity. Produces 4-5 squash per vine.
Originally introduced by Burgess Seed Co. in 1932, it has become the standard for all Buttercup squash.
Excellent for steaming, baking, stews or soups. Makes a great alternative to mashed sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie filling.
Sow 5 seeds per hill, 4' apart. Thin to best 2-3 plants. Squash seeds dislike cold soil. It's better to wait until the soil is warm to plant the seeds.
Medium keeper, harvest when yellow spot touching ground turns orange. Harvest just before first frost by cutting stems. Don't break the stems, they won't keep as long. Will store for two to three months.
