Green Machine Melon - The Ice Cream Melon
Reliably sweet, this green rind with succulent orange fleshed melon is a stabilized cross of a Kansas melon and Jenny Lind melon. Melons weighs 3 - 4 lbs. and does well in cool as well as warm areas. A truly succulent melon that stands out in today's supermarket bland melons.
The name Green Machine is reflective of the plants high-output of melons. It is also known as the Ice Cream melon because it is a perfect size for a scoop of ice cream.
The plants are very compact, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens.
The melon is indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle Eastern region to Afghanistan. Domestication may have taken place in Asia, as ancient Chinese writings show that melons were an important crop in China at least 2,000 years ago. Cultivation in the Mediterranean region started only at the end of the Roman era.
Melons are eaten fresh.
Melon seeds dislike cold soil. It's better to wait until the soil is warm to plant the seeds. Melons do not ripen much off the vine so it is important to pick them when they are ready. Ripe melons “slip” from the vine with light pressure.
