Hibiscus/Jamaica/Roselle - The Original Kool-Aid 

Hibiscus or roselle is a gorgeous red and green flowering shrub that is striking, unusual, edible and makes for a colorful and tasty garden addition. The young leaves, fruit, seeds, and roots are all used in foods or medicinal applications; however, the most popular part of the plant is the calyx, at the bottom of each flower. This fleshy, bright red cup-like protective layer around the seedpods is most known and used for tea infusions, jellies, jams, syrups, and as trendy recipe ingredients. 

Hibiscus tea is a familiar drink, and hibiscus syrups have been used in cocktails for a few years now. Innovative chefs are making vanilla ice cream swirled with candied hibiscus and lemonade with a shot of hibiscus called a Hibiscus Squeeze.

It is also known by several other names - Florida cranberry, red sorrel, or Jamaica sorrel, flor de Jamaica, Queensland jelly plant, jelly okra, and many more.


This tropical perennial is grown as an annual in more temperate climates. It is an erect, bushy, herbaceous shrub up to 8 ft tall, with smooth, cylindrical, typically red stems. Most varieties flower too late to produce usable calyxes in most of the US, but This Terroir Seeds exclusive strain matures much earlier than others, in as little as 100 days, when others have yet to set any flowers.


Roselle is a tropical shrub in the mallow family, originally from India and Southeast Asia and was spread through trade. Related to okra, it is grown as a beautiful annual ornamental hedge, patio perk-me-ups, and indoor plants by home gardeners. 


Tasting a lot like cranberries, Roselle may be used raw, dried or juiced. The fruit has a tart flavor and is usually paired with a sweetener and is used like cranberry in recipes for jam, jelly, and even wine. The dried fruit is usually steeped for hibiscus tea (the Zing in Red Zinger Tea), agua fresca, or jamaica. The bright red color and tart flavor made hibiscus the original and all natural Kool-Aid! Use boiling water to get the deep red color and great flavor.

The tartness balances rich, sweet desserts like cheesecake, and ice cream. Concentrated juice is deep crimson and is used as a natural food coloring for icing, dough or cake batter. Roselle compliments allspice, cinnamon, clove, ginger, honey, sugar, maple syrup, orange, and vanilla.

Roselle is attracting the attention of food and beverage manufacturers and pharmaceutical as a natural food product and as a colorant to replace some synthetic dyes. Has a laundry list of health benefits including lowering blood pressure. 

Harvest Tip

The calyxes are best harvested when fully grown but still tender, when, they can be snapped off by hand. Use clippers to harvest stems that have hardened but before they turn to brown. Harvesting early and often increases the production of calyxes over the season. Separate the seeds before drying or using them in your favorite recipe. The seeds are full of protein and can be roasted and ground and used as a coffee substitute or added to salads along with the young leaves.

    Gorgeous plant, ornamental even when they are not blooming. Ordered these seeds last year and started in late August in Texas and they grew really well.
