Poona Kheera Cucumber - The Golden Cucumber
An heirloom cucumber from Poona, India with delicious fruit that are at first cream or light green in color then turn light golden brown. The flesh is crisp, juicy, delicate and very different from that of a conventional cucumber. Traditionally sold when skin is light-green, but flavor is best and sweetest when skin is just turning brown.
Very heavy producer and trellising makes it easier to find fruit. Needs some space to spread out, not suited for square foot gardening or very small gardens unless planted along a fence or trellised up a wall.
Cucumbers are thought to have originated in India at the foot of the Himalayas, and cultivated in western Asia for 3,000 years. Well known by the ancient Greeks and Romans, introduced to China in the 2nd century BC. Columbus brought cucumbers to the New World in 1494.
Great for fresh use, canning, relish and pickles. Stores longer than other cucumbers.
Cucumbers need to be continuously harvested to keep up production. If the fruits yellow on the vine the plant will stop producing altogether, To harvest twist them off the vine or snip them with clippers to make sure you do not damage the vines.
