Description

Prescott Fond Blanc Melon - French Market Melon

Flattened, ribbed true French heirloom cantaloupe with warts and bumps, 4-9 lbs, grey-green rind ripens to straw color with salmon-orange flesh. Excellent flavor and fragrance, good yield, drought and wilt resistant. Keeps producing with an average of four melons per plant. Best flavor is produced in dry weather.

Mentioned in 1860s but is likely much older.

History

The melon is indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle Eastern region to Afghanistan. Domestication may have taken place in Asia, as ancient Chinese writings show that melons were an important crop in China at least 2,000 years ago. Cultivation in the Mediterranean region started only at the end of the Roman era.

Melons are eaten fresh. 

Growing Tip

Melon seeds dislike cold soil. It's better to wait until the soil is warm to plant the seeds.  Melons do not ripen much off the vine so it is important to pick them when they are ready. Ripe melons “slip” from the vine with light pressure.

    Grew quite well

    I tried this variety last year in Kingman, AZ, and it grew quite well and produced a good number of fruit. Unfortunately, through no fault of the variety, it started raining our seasonal monsoons just as the fruits were developing. The result was fruit that looked and smelled good but had a bland, washed-out flavor. I had the same problem with Kansas and Planters Jumbo melons. Fond Blanc is a true cantaloupe and it does NOT slip from the vine with ripe. If you wait for that to happen the fruit will rot on the vine. The only melons I grew last year that had great flavor were Hales Best and a honeydew called Ananas. Going to try Minnesota Midget and Charantais this year.
