Forms long slender green leaves in summer that turn deep-red with white veins in cooler weather. This non-heading variety is crisp yet tender having a tart with a pleasingly slight bitter undertone.
Rossa di Treviso, Red Treviso or Rouge de Trevise is a famous and much-loved radicchio from Treviso, Italy just north of Venice. Considered to be the best by connoisseurs.
History
Pliny mentions it in his Naturalis Historia, saying that in addition to being tasty they're good for insomnia and purifying the blood. He writes the Egyptians bred radicchio from its more wild ancestor, chicory.
Growing Tip
Direct seed or transplant in May, June or July for fall harvests. Will overwinter for spring harvests. Grows best in sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Water well, as plants left to dry out go to seed quickly.
