Stevia / Sweet Herb
Stevia is a tropical annual with very sweet leaves that yield the substance "stevioside'. Leaves are 100-300 times sweeter than table sugar, have virtually no calories and are not broken down by heat.
In Japan, artificial sweeteners were banned by the Department of Health, yet stevia accounts for almost half of the sweeteners used. In 1991 the FDA banned the import of Stevia into the U.S. because it posed a threat to the profit margins of the “sweetener giants”. The ban was lifted in 1995 and it is now sold as a “dietary supplement”.
Leaves can be dried, ground, soaked in water for a liquid, powdered, chewed by those wishing to reduce their sugar intake - or cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Studies show this non-caloric, natural sweetener lowers blood pressure, regulates heartbeat, is antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-yeast and retards dental plaque. No calories, no carbohydrates, no tooth decay! Diabetic safe, it nourishes the pancreas and does not raise blood glucose levels, making it safe AND beneficial for diabetics. Excellent weight loss aid with none of the negative side effects reported with the use of artificial sweeteners, including aspartame.
Naturally low germination (50% - or less).
