Zappallo de Tronco, also called Zapallito de Tronco and Avocado Squash is a bushy upright plant with 3-4" acorn type squash with great texture and flavor.
A wonderful cross between winter and summer squash with an edible rind. Can be eaten whole when small (2½-4 inches) as a summer squash or left to mature to the fully ribbed state and used as a winter squash. Very popular for farmers markets. Drought-tolerant and quick maturing.
Zappallo de Tronco makes both summer and winter squashes. The plant is semi bush and the squash in the summer has a dark green exterior and a light green flesh-similar to a hass avocado. It is sometimes referred to as an avocado squash.
The flesh is very smooth and dry. As a summer squash it does not give off a lot of excess water like a zucchini does. As a winter squash it is dry, semi sweet and a relatively short keeper. It is often used in cooking-soups, pies, etc. This would be an excellent squash to have back in major circulation.
