Hummingbird Garden Seed Collection

Hummingbirds are one of the most ethereal and fascinating creatures known. For centuries, they have captivated us with their beauty, diminutive size, and status as objects of affection and worship.

The hummingbird is a messenger of joy and luck to many.

One Northwest Coast legend states that Raven transformed a flower into a hummingbird. He gave the hummingbird a message to take to all the flowers, so we see them darting quickly from flower to flower and whispering the message, thanking each flower for its beauty and making our world a better place.

Another Northwest Coast legend says Dzunuk’wa – the guardian of the mountains – loved Hummingbird so much that she let it nest in her hair. As thanks for a safe place, Hummingbird made Dzunuk’wa beautiful by playing the role of her hair jewelry.

Hummingbirds are well-known to represent intelligence, beauty, devotion, and love.

However, these flying jewels are also revered as fierce fighters and defenders of their territory.

For the Aztecs, the lord over the sun, gold, and war was named Huitzilopochtli (weet see lu powch tuh lee), which literally translates to “hummingbird of the south.” He was the most powerful god in Aztec mythology, the supreme deity with no other god equal in power and prestige; he was said to be the brother of the other great gods, including Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god.

For Huitzilopochtli, the fiercest, mightiest spirit animal he could attach to was the hummingbird. The Aztecs believed that dead warriors were reincarnated as hummingbirds if they were worthy enough.

Details

Hummingbirds have a very high metabolism and must eat all day to survive. They consume over twice their body weight in insects and nectar, feeding every 10-15 minutes and visiting 1,000-2,000 flowers throughout the day.

Attract hummingbirds with nectar-rich flowers and create shelter and perching spots with mixes of annual and perennial flowers and herbs, giving them places to rest, seek shade, and hide from predators. These natural habitats are ideal, providing additional food sources like insects and spiders.

In addition, those habitats provide ideal nesting materials, as they often use soft plant fibers, lichen, and spider silk to build their nests.

Minimize pesticide use, as they often harm hummingbirds directly by thinning shells or indirectly by killing or poisoning insects they depend on as food.

Gardening to attract hummingbirds is easier than you might think. The perfect habitat is relatively straightforward – food, water, plenty of perches, shade, and shelter will bring them in. Adapting your current garden to make it attractive to these flying jewels is often straightforward.
