Tom Thumb Lettuce is a tennis ball sized Limestone Bibb type. Slightly savoyed, Bright green slightly crumpled leaves with a sweet, delicate flavor, on compact heads. One head makes a salad for two. Beautiful in small pots, window boxes, hanging baskets and planted under trees. Grows well planted close together in small spaces.
Dates to 1830's. - oldest American lettuce still grown. Very few offer this any more. From the 1888 RH Allen Seed Co- "Very dwarf, but an abundant yielder. Fine quality with heads about 9 inches."

Miner's Lettuce is a wonderful wild green whose vitamin C content helped prevent scurvy for miners when no fruit was available.
Crisp, mild, sprouting green, somewhere between a butter lettuce and spinach that makes a wonderful addition to mesclun mixes, salads and sandwiches. Leaves are small yet abundant and easy to pick. Hardy, prefers moist soils.

Oak Leaf Lettuce was first introduced in 1771 by Vilmorin. Firm rosettes of tender, sweet, light-green, deeply lobed leaves. As outer leaves are picked, plants produce more inner leaves.

Frisee Endive is rich in many vitamins and minerals, especially in folate and vitamins A and K, and is high in fiber. It has finely cut and narrow lacy leaves and is used extensively in gourmet salad blends for its texture, appearance and unique nutty flavor.

Green Leaf French Purslane has thick red succulent stems and fleshy leaves with small yellow flowers. Use whole young plants, young leaves and tender stem tips for a tasty potherb or raw in salads. Taste is very similar to watercress or spinach.

Little Gem Lettuce, or Sucrine, is a midget lettuce often described as 'a combination of Butter and Romaine'. A refined Dark Boston type with 4-5 in. tightly wrapped heads with bright green leaves, a pale yellow heart that is sweet and crunchy with a superb flavor described as nutty with a reserved sweetness.
