Description
Cinderella Pumpkin - Cinderella's Coach
Flattened round 10" pumpkins weighing 15–25 lbs on bush vines. Needs only 6 sq ft of well-drained soil to grow, will usually produce 2 fruit per plant. A very old French heirloom, this pumpkin makes an eye-catching decorative accent for the fall season, but their flavor is excellent for any pumpkin or winter squash recipe.
History
Also known as Red Etampes or more properly, Rouge Vif D'Etampes. "Rouge Vif" means "bright or vivid red" and this originated in the medieval town of Etampes, a small town about 30 miles southwest of Paris. The name correctly means "Bright red pumpkin from Etampes". Skin is bright orange to orange-red and flesh has an excellent flavor.
The Cinderella nickname is because they resemble the pumpkin that Cinderella's fairy godmother transformed into a carriage, having that almost perfectly round, deeply ribbed and slightly flattened shape. It is said that this was the model for Cinderella's coach.
It was a very common sight in the Paris Central Market in the 1880's. Introduced to American gardeners in 1883.
Uses
Stores well for winter use, but can be picked small like summer squash and grilled, steamed or fried. Very popular with Parisian chefs because of the excellent soup base it made, being flavorful but mild enough to not overpower the other ingredients, lending a warm background flavor. Simmered down and concentrated, it makes a great thick pumpkin stock with an appealing yellow color.
