Thought to have originated in India at the foot of the Himalayas, and cultivated in western Asia for 3,000 years. From India it spread through trade to Greece and Rome, where it was well known and enjoyed. Later, it was introduced to China in the 2nd century BC. The Roman Empire helped it's spread through Europe, with records showing cultivation in France in the 9th Century and England in the 14th Century.
It was brought to America from Englad in the mid 16th Century, though other varieties were already in the Americas from Columbus in 1494. They were growing in Native American gardens in Montreal in 1535, and in Virginia in 1584 when the English settlers arrived.
